Biography
Macaw Lodge was constructed with wood obtain from the lodge's own plantation and it was sawed at site. Another source of wood were the trees dragged by the Tarcoles River during the geat flood caused by the Jonas storm in 2010. I was necessary to extract the trees to avoid further damages to the waters downstream. The total quiantity of wood used to build the lodge, from the plantation as well as the dragged trees, sums up to 28,816 board feet.
The lodge produces its electricity from solar energy; therefore, it is energetically autonomous. It operates with energy and water savings systems. The energy saving is accomplished by optimizing solar energy and by using led lights, among others.
The water saviang is accomplished by using double flush toilets, dry urinals and low water-voulume showers. The water comes from the lodges own spring that is treated adequately, envionmentally safe, avoiding the use of chemicals in its treatment. The lodge has an evnironmentally friendly system to treat greyt and black waters,.
Educational Background
Graduated from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Science in General Agriculture. He went on to pursue a Master of Business Administration from Santa Clara University after five years work on a fruit farm in Costa Rica. After the conclusion of his master education, he worked for many years exporting ornamental plants to Europe. He was president of the Costarican Chamber of Producers and Exporters of Ornamental Plants. He was also elected as director of the Agricultural and Industrial Sugar Cane League, an organization that connects all sugar refineries and sugar cane producers in Costa Rica. He also has experience in the reforestation area. He has planted more than 500 hectares of Teak and Melina. He is also partner of the company Protecting the Forest Inc. that protects more than 600 hectares of cloud forest. Furthermore, he participated in the conceptualization, development and marketing of the Eco-Residential Villa Real in Santa Ana, Costa Rica. This Eco-Residential pioneered the integration of forest and gardens within a residential area. From the year 2004 to the present he has been working on the conceptualization and development of what we know today as Macaw Lodge; an eco-friendly lodge perfect for ecotourism that has not only a tropical botanic garden and primary forest but is also a working, self-sustainable farm.
