Women and Tourism: The Roles of Women in Belarusian Rural Ecotourism

International Women's Day (IWD) 2011

March 8th is the International Women's Day (IWD), a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future - which started 100 years ago! To celebrate IWD, and to recognize the importance of addressing existing challenges and opportunities for women all over the world, we would like to share the voices of our members and supporters about women and tourism.

Valeria Klitsounova, Belarusian Association of Rural and Eco Tourism

Valeria KlitsounovaAccording to UN Women, "Women lag far behind men in access to land, credit and decent jobs, even though a growing body of research shows that enhancing women's economic options boosts national economies." In your experience, how does tourism help empower women economically?

Maybe it will surprise you, but Belarusian agro- and ecotourism is tourism with woman's face, as the majority of farmstead owners are women. Often it is a family business but the lady of the house usually plays the main role. Belarusian women are extremely active and entrepreneurial; they are standing behind lots of events - festivals, eco-museums, etc. Women are playing a significant role in the sphere of agro- and ecotourism development!
