Echidna Walkabout stands up for ethical tourism

Australia's leading ecotour operator, Echidna Walkabout Nature Tours, has just been given the highest stamp of approval by international responsible tourism heavyweight Tourism Concern.

The wildlife tour operator, based in Melbourne, Australia achieved 4.5 stars on Tourism Concern's Ethical Travel Guide, one of only three organisations in the world with such a high rating for community well-being, social equity and environmental protection.

“In London after winning the gold award for “Best for Wildlife Conservation” I was excited to hear keynote presentations by Mark Watson, CEO of Tourism Concern. His organisation is setting the benchmark for a tourism future that is economically robust and ethical – a future we are determined to be part of” said Janine Duffy of Echidna Walkabout.

“The assessment helped us realise what we were doing well, and even gave us ideas on where we could improve.”

Mr Watson explained “Thousands of grass roots, low impact, high sustainability initiatives all over the world struggle to tell tourists they exist.”

“In the past, Tourism Concern has printed three editions of the Ethical Travel Guide, which list hundreds of small scale ethical and sustainable tourism organisations from around the world. However, a print publication has certain limitations - so we are building a revised the on-line edition. Echidna Walkabout have demonstrated a strong commitment towards ethical tourism principles and we are proud to list them in the Tourism Concern Ethical Travel Guide” commented Mr Watson.

The Ethical Travel Guide helps travellers make better decisions about where to go, who to go with, where to stay and what to do. Tourism Concern and Echidna Walkabout encourage other Australian tourism businesses to join this important movement.

Set up in 1988 Tourism Concern is a unique independent charity dedicated to campaigning for ethical and fairly traded tourism. We aspire towards a world where tourism is ‘ethical, fair and a positive experience for both travellers and the people and places they visit’. Our aim is to ensure tourism always benefits local people by challenging bad practice and promoting better tourism. For over 20 years Tourism Concern has exposed tourism’s worst human rights abuses and campaigned against them. Equally importantly, we promote tourism that benefits local people in tourist destinations. To learn more about Tourism Concern and the Ethical Travel guide go to
