    Sustainability Practices

We are committed to sustainable tourism and contributing positively to the individuals, communities and environments encountered by every AdventureSmith traveler. Our Carbon Free Cruising campaign has offset all carbon emissions created as a result of our cruise passengers. Through a network of local and global conservation partners we provide a means for travelers to make a contribution while at the same time enhancing your own travel experience through education and outreach.

AdventureSmith has become a strong force for sustainability in the cruising industry. We have influenced small ship operators, consolidators and even large cruise lines that cruise travelers are interested in sustainable options and operations. We seek out and work with small family owned sustainable cruise operations and made them available to the general public who might not be aware that these options exist. Visitors are immersed in remote, pristine environments where they experience true nature, wildlife and solitude up close. Many of our destinations can only be reached by small ship accessing landscapes that would otherwise be impossible for ordinary travelers to reach. We benefit host communities by relying on locally owned and operated yachts and lodges whenever possible. We prefer local guides over foreign tour leaders and seek to visit areas off the beaten path, not usually found on large ship cruises.

An important part of our mission is to give something back to the individuals, communities and environments encountered on every AdventureSmith Exploration. We achieve direct financial benefits for conservation by connecting our travelers with a network of grassroots and global non profit partners worldwide. We are members of and make contributions to many international organizations working toward conservation such as the International Ecotourism Association, Sustainable Travel International, the Rainforest Alliance and more. In addition to these international organization we also encourage clients to become members of local grassroots organizations working on community conservation issues such as the International Galapagos Tour Operators Association, Alaska Wilderness & Recreation Tourism Association, Galapagos Conservancy, Maya Works and more.

AdventureSmith Explorations can empower local people and ensure that the financial benefits of ecotourism stays in the community by utilizing locally owned and operated operations. This includes ships, yachts, lodges and hotels to transportation, guides, meals and attractions. We also work with partner organizations that offer scholarships, micro loans, and support community projects in every region we visit. We provide our travelers with extensive pre-trip preparation materials that includes background information on each region visited. On tour our guides strive to create connections between the interest of the visitor and the meanings inherent in the destination. Most often these meaning are tied to a host countries or regions political, environmental and social climate. One cannot care for a place until the connect with it. And one cannot connect with a place without understanding the issues surrounding it. Our trips strive to achieve this important foundation of conservation.
